Si le groupe Ecart, fondé par John Armleder, Patrick Lucchini et Claude Rychner, remonte à des amitiés d’enfance, l’ouverture de la galerie Ecart — que beaucoup considéraient comme l’espace alternatif en Europe le plus important des années 1970 (Ken Friedman) — a été officiellement créé à Genève en 1969. Parmi les productions d’Ecart, se trouve une dizaine de films super 8mm, certains réalisés par Endre Tót et Günther Ruch, réunis pour la première fois sur un DVD. Emblématique de la singulière économie collective du groupe, ces films attestent aussi des croisements de trajectoires entre médiums (performance, film, installation), de la liberté (tant esthétique que conceptuelle) et de l’hybridité des mouvements artistiques (de l’art conceptuel à l’action, de la poétique individuelle au partage de signature) qui caractérisaient la décennie 1970. While the Ecart group founded by John Armleder, Patrick Lucchini et Claude Rychner goes as far back as their childhood friendships, the opening of the Ecart Gallery—which many considered the most important alternative space in Europe during the 1970s (Ken Friedman)—officially came into being in 1969 in Geneva. Ecart members produced a dozen or so super 8 films, few directed by Endre Tót and Günther Ruch, compiled for the first time in this DVD. Emblematic of the group’s singular collective economy, these films also attest to the intersecting trajectories of different media (performance, film, installation), to aesthetic and conceptual freedom and to the hybrid nature of artistic movements (from conceptual art to action, from individual poetics to the sharing of signatures) characterizing the seventies.
